NOTEBOOKS have once again taken a long lead over desktop computers, according to the latest market figures.

Total PC sales in Australia during the April-June period grew by 2.7 per cent over same period last year, says industry analyst firm Gartner, representing 1.1 million new PCs sold.

Most of that action was enjoyed by notebooks, which surged by 17.5 per cent over the same time last year while desktop PC sales slumped by 4.3 per cent.

It seems many PC users are continuing to ditch their ageing desktops for a more modern notebook when it's time to step up to a new machine.

This is especially common in homes that have upgraded to broadband and set up a wireless network to share the signal around the house.

The numbers are looking especially good for Apple, which reported that Mac sales have rocketed by 12 per cent worldwide compared with last year.

New models, more aggressive pricing and the move to powerful Intel chips that let any Mac run Windows have all played their part in Apple's story.
